This fall, composer and pianist Marc-André Pépin unveils the result of his passion, work and musings with the release of his third opus, Variable Skies. These twelve compositions are like beautiful songs or brief movie scores. They confirm the talent of a live performer whose musical prowess first came to the fore when his second CD, Rendez-vous, was nominated for an ADISQ award in 2011.

Like a fine wine, Marc-André Pépin’s artistry becomes more refined over time. His opening piece, Mardi Gras, displays his very personal affection for ragtime. Variable Skies is a delectable series of variations on a common theme, a landscape transformed by the changing seasons. Each composition has its colour, emotion, image and feeling that share a certain tone of serenity.

The melodies of Marc-André Pépin’s new release retain several common features from the previous albums. The music is easy listening without being facile. We can thoroughly enjoy it as a background companion, or appreciate its rich flavour and subtleties if we wish to focus singularly on the music. The classical influence of the tight, beautifully-crafted composition is undeniable. The pleasure of listening to it only increases with time, like a bottle from a superb vintage!
